Early summer afternoons in Esperance are usually characterised by a good strong easterly and December was no exception. So rather than battle the famous 'Blizzard of a Million Shards of Diamond-edged Beach Sand', our little crew of adventurers led by Ryan and Aleisha (AKA Mum and Dad) headed north to Helms Arboretum.
Helm's provided gentle shade, amazing shelter - and a profusion of pine cones. Always a favourite with kids, we went on a bit of a pine cone and stick hunting adventure, which finished with several special cones being loaded for safekeeping into the camera bag. The Nelson's proved a very fun and relaxed troupe, full of the best smiles, most willing camera assistants, and the loveliest hugs! We had a bit of a jumping competition thrown in for good measure, and Ryan allowed displays of aeronautical prowess with the favourite 'child toss and catch' (which I'm sure makes all the mums hold their breath). Our adventurers let me catch a few final shots in the best light - as bushfire haze to the west diffused and lit the sky between the trees in blush pink and gold. All three musketeers left with sleepy faces and hands clutching precious pine cones, ready for bed and bigger adventures to come.

Dusty afternoon warmth. Stilled paddocks, gilded in honeyed light. Curious chickens following a pram down a bush track. These are just a few momentary snatches that make on farm shoots timeless.
I always feel privileged to share those little bits of summer joy, that can only be found in the scrub and stubble, and my mid January session off the gravel roads of Munglinup was divine. I started the afternoon fawning equally over Jess' luscious plants and Paul's rescued paddock chicks (Plover or Quail?), but baby Roy boy soon took centre stage. Such an inquisitive boy! Full of chatter and wonder, watching proceedings intently. We took a quick trip down the gravel, to that iconic piece of rural Australiana - the farm sign, catching the stronger light and afternoon breeze. Later as the wind dropped and the light grew gentle, we tracked through the bush, across granite and out into open space. Hectares of sun bleached stubble, stretched gently across Munglinup's rolling terrain, touched gently by the last light. We found a stump heap and spread a blanket, taking in the last heat before dusk settled about. I left just after the chickens were shut safely away for the night, and the first roos stood sentinel on the way home. Ah, the serenity! Thanks for having me Paul, Jess and Roy boy (: Hey all,
A quick update. I'm gradually getting to spending time on this site and my FB page. One great development of late has been the addition of an Iphone - pure doco photog arsenal! It's given me the ability to capture decent images for more daily journalistic experiences. See the below. This is everyday for me but something I hold dear. My families wild haven - resting place of my youngest brother. I go out there less than I would like and each time I do reflect on what he is missing and how happy he would be with where he is now. Home. Hey!
I'm not big on self promotion, however in order to chase my doco/photo essay dreams I needed a platform to display (show off) my work. So here it is. Facebook is about as good as I get in the post of images... and to be honest, some may take offense to some of my latest work. Not everyone can appreciate faces showing agony or dead vermin under a harsh spotlight. So, in order to neutrally display my images in a way that they are not judged in ignorance of the greater story, I have set up a site. I hope that those that visit me, seek as much as I do. Seek the moment, the light, the action and expression, composition...intricacies. Seek the story. The person, the emotion, the reasons, the greater picture. Seek to understand, to appreciate, to wonder. To seek is to observe. To seek is to find. I want to share what I find. The more we look though, the more unresolved intricacies we find. The search is never ending. A thirst is never truly quenched... Come join me. I will show you my backyard, the people, the Australia that I find. |
